Miss Cecily’s Recipes for Exceptional Ladies | Book Review

Themes of friendship, reinvention, and food await.

I’ve got a mountain of eBooks saved on my app, long tucked away. Whenever I’m between paperbacks, I scroll through my digital stash and pick whatever’s next in line. I saved it ages ago, drawn in by the book’s design and its name, but only now did it finally get its turn.

Bestselling author and journalist Tasmina Perry calls it a beautiful and thoughtful read. Her advice is simple. Read it, enjoy it and then share a copy with your friends. And that’s exactly what I plan on doing.

This is one of my most recent reads and the one I knew I had to feature first. Why? Because it’s the book that nudged me to take the leap and start this blog. Sometimes a story arrives at exactly the right moment, and for me, this was the spark that took a quiet possibility and turned it into something real.

To celebrate the start of this blog, there’s a little giveaway waiting further down.

Why this one caught my eye

I choose books by their covers, and this one drew me in with its vibrant yellow and the words iced onto a cookie. There was a warm charm to it that held my attention.

Between the eye-catching cover and the title’s gentle hint of whimsy, I was sold.

A quick look at the book

Miss Cecily’s Recipes for Exceptional Ladies, a contemporary women’s fiction novel, is written by British author Vicky Zimmerman. It comes in at over 400 pages, a generous read.

At its heart, it’s a story about connection and nourishment. It follows the threads of friendship, self‑discovery, reinvention and the realities of love and ageing. And it leaves you with a quiet question: Is there anything in my life that no longer serves me?

On Goodreads, it has earned a broadly positive response from thousands of readers.

What stayed with me

What really lingered was the idea that it’s never too late to rewrite your story. Life doesn’t have to move in a straight line. You can pivot, rediscover your purpose and make choices that bring you closer to the life you want to live.

The cross‑generational friendship at the heart of the book is wonderfully written. Miss Cecily’s honesty is raw, witty and often brutal. It genuinely made me want to go out and befriend someone with stories worth listening to. Just as evocative are the food descriptions, which left me closing chapters feeling hungry and a little tempted to cook.

I journeyed with these ladies, feeling everything from sorrow and frustration to real delight and excitement. One line in particular lodged itself in my heart:

I’m not afraid of dying, Kate. I’ve been ready for years. And I learned not to be afraid of living. Fear is a terrible thing. It paralyses you far more than being stuck in an old body.

For most of the book, I was firmly in the main character’s corner. Somewhere in the middle, I found myself stuck right alongside her and wanted to give her a gentle (or not‑so‑gentle) nudge to get moving. Being the same age, on the cusp of 40, made her journey resonate, even if our lives unfolded very differently.

A touching detail that stayed with me is that the story was inspired by the author’s grandmother and a real 1950s cookbook. That nostalgic thread adds depth and heart.

At its heart, this book left me with a deeper appreciation for good food, the people I love, and the power of my choices in shaping the life I want.

Who it’s for

Perfect for readers who love food‑centric fiction or anyone craving a bit of inspiration.

This is a warm, gently paced, character‑driven read, ideal for when you want something heartfelt.

In terms of sensitive content, the book stays very gentle. You’ll find isolated swearing, implied intimacy, and a few emotional threads (grief, loss, infertility, and challenging relationships), along with brief references to historical trauma.

Where to find it in South Africa

This one might be a little tricky to find in store, so browsing online is likely your easiest option. Start with well‑known retailers such as Exclusive Books or Takealot, depending on what is available at the time. Delivery may take longer than usual.

If you’d like quicker access, the eBook is a convenient choice.

My verdict

It’s an easy read, light with moments of depth. I flew through this one in just a few days. The movement between present‑day London and the past adds texture without ever weighing the story down.

Give this one a try. It’s the kind of book I’d happily recommend to a friend, which is exactly why it’s included in my kick‑off competition. If you’re keen to win a copy, you’ll find the entry details further down the page.

As promised, no spoilers here. But if you’re curious about something specific and don’t mind a bit more detail, feel free to reach out. I’m always happy to chat about books.

Already read it? Do you agree with my reflections? I’d love to hear what you thought.

If you made it to the end of this post, thank you for reading. I hope this book finds its way onto your shelf.

Happy reading,

J

    1. Jean-Marie! I love your blog already. I cant wait to read more. It is beautifully written. I have also recently discovered a love for books, especially heartfelt stories. I read every night before bed. It is the only calming antidote that works for my sleeplessness.

I am currently reading the Seven Sisters series. I find the stories moving yet it does take me quite a while to get into them.

I am so excited to read “Miss Cecily’s…” and really hope I win your competition. Thank you for not sharing any spoilers but making me just hungry enough to want to read it.

In terms of reinvention. I have recently reinvented my artistic approach. You see, I am an artist and I have recently discovered my artist voice which has changed my entire brand and process. Since this change I feel liberated and for the first time in my 10 year art career I care less about pleasing viewers and more about what I have to say and the impact I want to make through my art.

I would like to continue on this road of reinvention and hopefully it will give me the guts to work on a project that has been pressing on my heart for over a decade. I do feel it is time for this project to be birthed but it will take a lot of work, faith and courage because it will most definitely mean reinventing myself, my rhythm, my work ethic and bearing my soul open for the world to see.

I am looking forward to your next blog.
      May you be blessed,

      Lily Maas

      1. Oh Lily, I’m beyond touched by your lovely comment! I’m so glad you’re loving the blog and finding solace in books, especially those heartfelt stories that speak to the soul.

Your journey with reinvention resonates deeply – finding your artist voice and shifting focus to what truly matters is like unlocking a new level of freedom.

That project you’re nurturing sounds like it’s been waiting patiently for you to take the leap. It’s scary to be vulnerable; but that’s often where the magic happens.

Can’t wait to share more stories and see where your path takes you. Keep shining, Lily!

P.S. Fingers crossed for you in the giveaway.

I normally don’t comment on blogs, but you made a brave move by starting your own and I enjoyed reading it! The quote from the book and the multigenerational friendships reminds me of a book that I recently read called Thursdays at Eight. A major theme in it is the women supporting and encouraging each other, so here I am giving my support and encouragement to another woman! I hope this is the start of a rewarding journey for you!

      1. Thank you so much! I appreciate you taking the time to comment and for the support. Looking forward to sharing more and I love the idea of women supporting women. I’ll definitely check out Thursdays at Eight.

Congratulations on taking that step J! What a beautifully, well written review. It felt like eating a deeply flavoursome lamb curry with roti, with fingers all messed due to pure enjoyment. Yes, I am a foodie, so of course I have to equate everything to a favourite dish of mine!
I would absolutely enjoy digging into this book. The best line in this review for me is that “it’s never too late to rewrite your story”. How that resonates with me. I can personally vouch for that. How I would love to meet Miss Cecily. She sounds like my kinda gal!
